Plotting a Map of Android Inter-App Communication

Award #: N/A
Amount Awarded: $50,000
Sponsoring Organization: Google
Grant Period: 2012-2013
Primary Investigator(s): Patrick McDaniel (PI), Eric Bodden (co-PI - Technische Universitat Darmstadt), Yves Le Traon (co-PI - University of Luxembourg)

The objective of the consortium is to build a privacy road map of the inter-communication superhighway of Android applications. Android apps have a wide variety of ways to communicate, including Binders, Intents, Content Providers, and the file system. But how do apps communicate? What communication paths are common and what paths reveal uncommon and potentially suspicious or malicious communication? Our map will answer those questions. The map will be compositional, such that communication paths involving several applications can be detected.
